• Kokoro Ramen (Melbourne)

It was 2005 and I was in a ski town near Kanazawa, Japan. The snow was plentiful that season and we navigated over the icy roads to find an inconspicuous ramen house.  Our eyes widened as steaming bowls of noodle soup were placed in front of us one-by-one.

Ramen is a cold weather food in Japan, here it is as you wish but rarely vegetarian.  The popular Kokoro Ramen has changed that with a dedication to vegetarians taking a page of their menu.  It is one dish.  Vegetarian ramen.

The broth is slightly salty and filled with egg, seaweed, corn, mushrooms, spring onions and, of course, squiggly egg noodles.  To accompany is a serve your-self bar of kimchi.

As I sat slurping my hot soup, I smiled at how restaurants are bringing vegetarian to the norm.  Not only was the meal vegetarian, but it was tasty, wholesome and filling too.

Kokoro Ramen fills up most lunch times, and dinner is popular too.

For vegetarians I would recommend it.  It is vegetarian and authentic ramen.

  1. I remember having many steaming bowls of ramen one winter in Japan. We went to a rather unusual place to try their famous ramen. The place was unusual because there was no contact with the wait staff; you filled in your order on a form and then slip it under a curtain. A bit like going to a confessional except no talking was allowed. You were also supposed to eat in silence. Kokoro Ramen sounds like a good place to try. Ros

  2. That sounds hilarious! Although many cultural customs in Japan are very different to those here. And did they make nice ramen?

    1. They did indeed. It was recommended by one of my Japanese students so we knew it would be good. It was about the only meal I've ever had in silence although we did whisper to each other about how good the ramen tasted. Ros

  3. This is a new sushi restaurant in Melbourne. I met the sushi chef a few weeks ago and he said there was a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

    1. Hi Ros,
Thanks for the tip! I don't often head out that way but it seems I might have to make an exception. The food looks very nice in the pictures. Well priced too. Please let me know what you think if you end up getting there before me.
